Tailor's Shop: Laces and Points

Laces and points are essential items of dress for both men and women, and these are the best you can buy! They are all finished at both ends with handmade brass aiglets which are firmly fixed onto the lace with iron rivets. The aiglets are beautifully crafted with a smooth finish which makes threading the lace or point through an eyelet hole as easy as can be. We offer long laces for fastening bodices as well as sets of short points for trussing doublets and hose.

Basic Laces

These are the laces we have always used for fastening bodices. They are a poly-cotton mix which makes them extremely strong and durable. As with all of our laces and points, the riveted aiglets will stay in place no matter how often they are used.

Deerskin points

The deerskin used for these handmade laces has been through a tanning process very close to the oil/alum tawing process used in the 16th century. The results are soft flexible laces that can hold a tight half-bow, whilst being surprisingly strong. These laces get better and better the more they are used!

These are the ultimate in lacing luxury! Handmade by Gina Barrett for The Tudor Tailor in 100% silk and finished with Gary Smedley's excellent brass aiglets. A lace fit for a Queen, or Gentlewoman, or smug merchant's wife...

Gold plated aiglets

These solid brass, gold plated aiglets were originally commissioned back in 2003 for the reconstruction of the costume of the Unknown Man in Red for Hampton Court Palace. A detail of the sleeve, featuring the aiglets, graces the front cover of The Tudor Tailor. We regularly receive enquiries from customers wishing to purchase these and so have persuaded our supplier to provide us with another limited run. We only have a very small number in this batch - order now to avoid disappointment!
