Bookshop: Textiel in context: An analysis of archeological textile finds from 16th century Groningen

This book is the culmination of Dr Hanna Zimmerman's PhD study of the textiles found in the town of Groningen in the Netherlands in 2000. Hundreds of textile fragments, and numerous complete garments and hats, were recovered from a section of moat that was constructed in 1575 and then used as a landfill by the townspeople for twenty years. The moat was filled in by 1600 and therefore the site contains evidence of everyday dress from a very narrow and firmly dated period in the sixteenth century. Many of the garments show signs of having been extensively altered and repaired before being thrown away.

Although the book is written in Dutch, there are summaries of each chapter in English and the photographs and illustrations are excellent. The Tudor Tailor team were privileged to be hosted by Dr Zimmerman at her home near Groningen in late 2012 where she showed us a selection of the remarkable finds. We plan a return visit to further study the collection but in the meantime we thought we should at least give our readers the opportunity to purchase this fascinating book for themselves!
